From Timidity to Multi-Talented

Gordon at NYP’s Flight Simulator

Gordon was by nature a shy and timid boy. But when you see the 20-year old today, you will not find a tinge of that shyness or timidity. He attributed his transformation to his mother, who persevered for the sake of her three children despite going through a rough patch, and re-entered the workforce after 20 years so that she can support them independently. Inspired by her never-say-die attitude and not wanting to let her down, he was spurred to work even harder in his Aerospace Systems & Management diploma course at Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP).

His hard work paid off when he was awarded the NYP-Makino Asia Scholarship at the end of Year 1, which has helped relieved his family’s financial burden. His academic achievements also included being a regular on the Director’s List, where he achieved a GPA of 3.97 with 16 Distinctions and 15 As.

Gordon stepped out of his shy and timid nature during his course of study. His major breakthrough came during his internship at Thales Solutions Asia Pte Ltd. Not only did he acquire new technical skills, he also sharpened his communication skills, where he made a conscious effort to interact and build strong relationships with his colleagues, especially the experienced engineers. By the end of his internship, Gordon was comfortable with meeting new people and no longer shied away from crowds.

It was also at NYP that Gordon discovered another strength—playing the viola. From an amateur to becoming the vice president of NYP Strings Ensemble, Gordon excelled in his newfound passion through sheer hard work. Some of his fondest memories in NYP were the group’s performances at events, such as the National Environment Agency’s Singapore Clean & Green Carnival and NYP’s musical production, ‘Viva’.

Always on a lookout for opportunities to stretch his limits, Gordon also took part in numerous competitions while in NYP. One of such competition was the inaugural SPARK Short Film Competition 2015, where he had the opportunity to exercise his leadership skills, and led his team to victory.

In recognition of his excellent academic achievements, active involvement in music, environmental conservation and community activities, kind and helpful nature as well as good communication skills, Gordon was presented the distinguished Lee Kuan Yew Award. Not only that, he was awarded the Thales Gold Medal for topping his cohort.

From a shy and timid boy to a multi-talented engineering scholar at NYP, Gordon is all ready for the next chapter of his life—a degree in Engineering in SUTD on a scholarship.
