TV Commercial Sparks Journey to Imperial College
Lovell Ong’s single-minded passion for nanotechnology, has allowed him to blaze a path to the prestigious Imperial College.
But his spark for engineering came from an unusual source – TV commercial.
He said, “Actually I saw an advertisement about how a watch could morph into something else. That’s how I became intrigued by nanotechnology.”
So after he graduated from Jurong Secondary School with straight As, he immediately pursued a Diploma in Nanotechnology & Materials Science at Nanyang Polytechnic. He quickly found success and was awarded the ST Engineering scholarship in his first year of studies.
By the time he graduated from the course in 2012, he topped his cohort with 26 Distinctions and 7 As, and was the proud recipient of the 3M Singapore Gold Medal, 3M Singapore Award for Outstanding Project Work and the Lee Kuan Yew Award.
Lovell also used his time in the polytechnic to pursue many sporting endeavours. He served as President of Nanyang Polytechnic’s Adventure Club and was nominated as a torch bearer during the “Journey of Youth Olympic Flame” in the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
He also took part in the Polytechnic Forum in 2011 in addition to organizing an annual leadership camp for CCA leaders. He participated in several leadership activities such as a YEP programme in Cambodia as well as the Outward Bound leadership programmes in Singapore and Taiwan.
Today, he is in his second year of a four- year Direct Masters in Materials Science at the Imperial College, London, one of the top universities in the world. He is sponsored by ST Engineering for his Master’s programme. Upon graduation he will be employed as an engineer in ST Engineering.
