Overcoming All Odds
The journey to realise his dreams wasn’t altogether smooth sailing for Marine & Offshore Technology graduate, Keave Sim.
In the course of his study at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, one of the struggles that he experienced was to visualise and understand some of the theories taught by his lecturers. This resulted in him resorting to memorising certain subjects. However, he pressed on, and successfully graduated from his course.
Upon completing his National Service, he was offered an opportunity to participate in the SkillsFuture Earn and Learn Programme (ELP). Through this programme, students are given a head start in their career as they undergo a work-study programme, being matched with a job related to their discipline of study. This allows them to develop a deeper understanding of what they have learnt in school.
Seeing this as a chance to enhance his learning, Keave took up a specialist diploma course while receiving on-job training at Keppel Singmarine. The experience and exposure he gained have given him invaluable insights into the industry. “Joining Keppel Singmarine has been an eye-opening and fruitful experience, as the company provides ample training opportunities for their employees. The management was also open to assign me with key roles and responsibilities,” Keave said.
Despite the challenges he encountered while pursuing his passion, Keave’s determination, along with the ELP and a supportive employer, helped make achieving his dreams possible.
