1. What is Engineering & Science Quiz 2009 ?
The primary objective of Engineering & Science Quiz (ESQ) is to generate enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and math skills at a crucial stage in the development of young people. ESQ is a multiple choice question quiz on science, technology, engineering and mathematics that participating teams require to complete within a certain specified time.
2. Who can take part?
Secondary schools can register a maximum of 4 teams for the quiz. Each team will comprise of 3 students.

4. Format of Engineering & Science Quiz 2009
(I) Preliminary Round
• An on-line multiple choice question quiz will be conducted on 3rd September at 4:15pm in Singapore Polytechnic. • The quiz will comprise of 50 questions from the disciplines of Science, Engineering and Mathematics and will be of 1 hour duration. • A team comprises of 3 members and each member will take the quiz individually. • The marks of all the three members of the team are considered to evaluate the total team mark. • Five finalist teams, selected on the basis of total team mark, will enter the final round of Engineering & Science Quiz.
(II) Final Round The final Round of Engineering & Science Quiz will be conducted on 20th October in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Finalists should reach Ngee Polytechnic by 11am. The final round comprises of the following two stages.
(a) 1st Stage (Total of 6 Multiple-choice Questions)
- All teams have to answer 2 questions (worth 20 & 40 points respectively) from each of the categories. For each question, the teams will input their answer through the 3 wireless response systems at the same time.
- The 3 categories are:
- Mathematics - Science - Engineering
- No penalty for incorrect answers.
- 15 seconds to answer each question after the question is read by quiz master.
(b) Fastest finger Round (Total of 12 Multiple-choice Questions)
- Each team will “fight” for the opportunity to answer MCQ questions by pressing a buzzer.
- The team which presses the buzzer first will be given 10 second to answer the question. Each correct answer is worth 20 points and incorrect answer will incur a penalty of 20 points.
- If the Team which presses the buzzer first gives a wrong answer then the team that presses the buzzer second will be given chance to answer the same question within10 second. For this team, each correct answer is worth 10 points and incorrect answer will incur a penalty of 10 points.
