1. What is Solar Powered Vehicle Competition?

Solar Powered Vehicle Competition (SPVC) is a design and race competition, where participants will construct a vehicle that should complete the race in the shortest possible time using power available from a solar panel.

The objectives of the competition are to create awareness, among young people, about engineering and allow them to experience the fun aspect of engineering. The competition also creates a platform for students to unleash their creativity and ingenuity in designing the vehicle.

2. Who can take part?

Each team will comprise of three students and a maximum of TWO teams per secondary school is allowed to participate in the competition.

3. Free SPVC Kit and Solar Panel

All participating teams will be given SPVC kit, comprising of 2 pieces of connector, 1 piece of diode and 1 super capacitor mounted (soldered) on a Printed Circuit Board (PCB), first 60 registered teams will be given solar panel FREE of charge.

It is mandatory for the team receiving the FREE solar panel to participate in the competition on 20th October. The SPVC kit and solar panel must be returned if this team is not able to participate in the competition.

Regulations and Specifications

  • Design a solar-powered vehicle whose overall dimensions must not exceed 15 cm width by 25 cm length by 8 cm height. The three dimensional body of the vehicle must be your own design and not use a commercially available vehicle body frame. You are encouraged to use recycled materials.
  • Only a prescribed solar panel can be used directly to charge the super-capacitors to power the vehicle (no other booster or batteries are allowed). The solar panel supplied by the organizer must be used without any modification. The first 60 registered teams will be given solar panel FREE of charge. The team receiving the free solar panel must participate in the competition on 20th October. The solar panel must be returned if this team is not able to participate in the competition.
  • All participating teams will be given SPVC kit, comprising of 2 pieces of connector, 1 piece of diode and 1 super capacitor mounted (soldered) on a Printed Circuit Board (PCB), FREE of charge. The PCB and components supplied by organizer must be used without any modification.
  • Only one motor (voltage capacity: max 5V) can be used. The participants are to source for their own motor. It is not provided by the organizer.
  • The winner will be the vehicle deemed by the judges to have covered the length of the track in the shortest time and to have adhered to the rules. In the event of a tie the vehicles will take part in a best timing of three lengths of the track.
  • Judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entertained.
