What does an Engineer do?
Or who exactly is an engineer?
Search for the meaning of the
word engineer in the dictionary and youll probably find a
really broad but short definition of engineering like:
An Engineer is
person who uses scientific knowledge to identify and solve practical
problems
Quote from: The
American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language
or
"Every technological
product has to be designed and its fabrication overseen, and this is what
engineers do."
Quote from:
Samuel Florman, The Civilized Engineer ISBN 0312025599
Confused? It is not easy to
understand what an engineer does from just a few words. In fact this whole site
is meant to help answer that question. Engineers as a group are probably the
most creative people. They challenge, connect, visualise, harmonise, improvise,
reorient, and synthesise. In simpler term, it means that they make new things
and make old things better. People in the arts are creative too; but their
creativity deals with thoughts or emotions. Engineering creativity is directed
at things.
I take the vision which
comes from dreams and apply the magic of science and mathematics, adding the
heritage of my profession and my knowledge of nature's materials to create a
design.
I organise the efforts
and skills of my fellow workers employing the capital of the thrifty and the
products of many industries, and together we work toward our goal undaunted by
hazards and obstacles.
And when we have
completed our task all can see that the dreams and plans have materialised for
the comfort and welfare of all.
I am an Engineer, I
serve mankind, by making dreams come true.
